RSS & Firefox 2 Woes

Posted October 26, 2006, 8:05pm In: Browsers, XML, XSLT, RSS, Atom

I’ve been having a bit of trouble with RSS feed readers as late.

Previously, I stayed away from feed readers, built into Firefox or otherwise. I was more apt to check my links manually for new posts.

Unfortunately, since upgrading to Firefox 2, I have over 50 sites I check regularly; it would be a better use of my time to use feed readers.

I tried Wizz RSS - and I loved it, with one exception - it would inform me of new posts that weren’t exactly new. Case and point, this post by Ed Merrit. A couple days ago, I thought it was a new post and commented as such. It wasn’t until I noticed the date that I realized my blunder.

Recently, I tried Sage. I hate it - I can’t get it to check my feeds regularly, or alert me with new posts like Wizz RSS does. Not to mention that it “claims” there are broken feeds, with people such as my good compadre Tanin, Content With Style, Pixelated Dreams and Shaun Inman. I can’t see CwS’s feeds being ‘broken’ - can you?

So now this brings me to a complete 360 degree circle. I’m back at the beginning. Any one have any recommendations for a feed reader extension for Firefox?

IE 7 Released

Posted October 18, 2006, 11:46pm In: Browsers

Today we released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP. I encourage everyone to download the final version from http://www.microsoft.com/ie.

Does anyone remember when IE 6 came out? The browser was fraught with bugs; always crashing, wasn’t really widely supported, so on and so forth. After that, they started. All these sites coming out of the woodwork supporting IE only. Maybe it’s only my memory, but I seem to remember it was worse after that.

This time around… Well, it’s obvious things have changed. The IE blog for instance is getting a lot of attention from all circles. Coverage of the release (and it’s development) has been pretty widespread.

I won’t be downloading IE7 any time soon.

No, no punchline. I’m serious. My last experience with the browser was so completely negative I’m deathly afraid of downloading the new release. Even though I’m a developer and in theory I SHOULD download it, I’m terrified about what it will do to my computer. Exploding monitors, frying my motherboard, et cetera.

I assure you, anyone that downloads IE7, fiery ant DOOM shall rain down from the skies upon thy beautiful scenery, fine dining, time at the spa and general merriment…

Alright, fine, download it if you must see what all the hype has been about. Just don’t look at me when it explodes in your face. I’ll only snicker quietly and say I told you so. *nod*

Of course, it is entirely possible I’m dead wrong.
